01 / Manifesto

Vocabulary is only part of the language. A Swede hears something else first: whether your vowel length holds the syllable and whether your pitch accents land in the right valley.

Swedish moves
between melody and length.

Test A/B · 00:02

The same order at a bakery in Stockholm, read twice. Swedish sounds musical because stressed syllables follow strict acoustic weights, and compounding triggers a second pitch peak.

[A] Textbook Swedish5 pauses · 4.4 s

En… kaffe… och… en… kanel…

[B] Native Swedish1 breath · 1.7 s

En kaffe å‿en kanelbulle, tack.

Both recordings feature synthetic voices calibrated for this comparison. Timing figures reflect averages from empirical Swedish phonetic research (Gösta Bruce 1977, Claes-Christian Elert 1964).

02 / The anatomy of cadence

Four acoustic habits of spoken Swedish that we train in the room, and that a native listener recognizes within the first three words.

01Accent 1 vs 2 · 2 F0 peaks

Tonaccenten — The two pitch peaks

«anden» (duck) ≠ «anden» (spirit)

On paper they look identical. Central Standard Swedish tells them apart through pitch alone. Accent 1 carries a single early fundamental frequency rise, while Accent 2 builds a characteristic two-peaked curve across the word. Mix them up and «tomten» (the garden plot) becomes «tomten» (Santa Claus).

02V:C vs VC: · 240 ms / 110 ms

Vokalkvantitet — Complementary length

«mata» [mɑːta] ≠ «matta» [matːa]

Every stressed syllable in Swedish is long, but length is complementary: either a long vowel followed by a short consonant (V:C, ca 240 ms / 110 ms), or a short vowel followed by a long consonant (VC:, ca 120 ms / 230 ms). If you shorten both, the rhythm falls flat.

03/r/ + C · 5 retroflex mergers

Supradentaler — Retroflex fusion & sje

«kort» [kʰʊʈː] · «sju» [ɧʉː]

r+tʈ

When /r/ precedes /t, d, n, s, l/, the tongue tip curls up toward the hard palate, fusing both sounds into a single retroflex consonant. Pair that with the unique voiceless dorso-palatal velar fricative [ɧ] in words like «stjärna», and Swedish gains its soft, flowing friction.

04F2 shift · 2600 → 1900 Hz

Läpparkitektur — The shape of the mouth

«bita» [iː] ≠ «byta» [yː] ≠ «böta» [øː]

iy

From I to Y the tongue barely moves: it stays high and forward, and the lips round and push forward instead. That lengthens the vocal tube and darkens the sound, so «bita» (bite) becomes «byta» (swap). Ö is different: the tongue drops lower, the jaw opens a little and the lips stay rounded. How far the lips move varies from speaker to speaker; what matters is the contrast you hear.
